Why It's Called Lovers Beach
Lovers Beach, or Playa del Amor, is a beautiful and picturesque destination situated at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The name "Lovers Beach" has romantic connotations, reflecting the area’s appeal to couples seeking a serene escape. According to local legend, the beach earned its name due to its secluded nature, making it an ideal spot for lovers to enjoy intimate moments away from the bustling tourist scene. Its stunning sand dunes and crystal-clear waters amplify the romantic ambiance, attracting visitors from around the world.
This iconic beach is flanked by impressive rock formations that add to its visual allure. Known for its unique geology, Lovers Beach features a striking contrast between the tranquil waters of the Sea of Cortez and the turbulent waves of the Pacific Ocean. This geographical positioning has made it a favored spot for various activities, such as snorkeling, swimming, and sunbathing. The juxtaposition of calm and rough waters offers a stunning sight, fostering an enchanting atmosphere that enhances the beach's appeal as a lovers' retreat.
Numerous local stories contribute to the beach's enchanting allure. For instance, a popular tale involves a pair of star-crossed lovers who sought refuge from a storm, only to find their destinies intertwined with the captivating beauty of the beach. This narrative, along with others, enriches the cultural tapestry of Lovers Beach, inviting visitors to create their own memories while embracing the location's romantic history.
Visitors to Lovers Beach often feel a sense of connection to the legends surrounding it, driving home the idea that this beach is not just a scenic spot, but a place steeped in romance and meaningful history. Exploring this essential aspect of Lovers Beach adds depth to the overall experience, allowing guests to appreciate the blending of natural beauty and cultural narratives that define this remarkable local.
Getting to Lovers Beach: Transportation and Costs
Reaching Lovers Beach in Cabo, Mexico, requires some planning, particularly concerning transportation and costs. The beach is not directly accessible by land, as it is nestled between the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean. The most popular way to reach this picturesque destination is by taking a water taxi or a boat transfer. These services are available from the marina in Cabo San Lucas, with numerous providers offering roundtrip journeys. Alternatively if you like to plan ahead you can pre-book your trip!
The typical cost for a roundtrip water taxi to Lovers Beach is approximately $10 to $25 per person, however, price can typically be negotiated at the beach. When we went in 2021 we paid $15/person round trip. Make sure you bring cash for the water taxi and also anything you would like to buy once there (umbrella, chairs, fresh fruit or pineapple drinks).
The marina serves as the main departure point, making it convenient to find available water taxis. Most boat operators are situated at the southern end of the marina, easily identifiable by their colorful signage and waiting boats. We didn't book our trip ahead of time and rather just walked down the beach, there are plenty of vendors trying to sell you their trip. My best advice is to have a price in mind of how much you want to pay and stick to your guns. Don't let them upsell you!
The journey by boat typically takes around 10 to 15 minutes, most tours booked directly at the marina will be about 2 hours which is plenty of time to enjoy the beach and even walk to Divorce Beach which is on the Pacific side.

What to Bring:
When planning your trip to Lovers Beach, it is crucial to prepare adequately given that the beach is can only be accessed by water taxi there aren't any restaurants or bathrooms there. You will find a few vendors on the beach offering umbrella/chair rentals, some drinks and snacks however, its best to be prepared with your own stuff in the event they run out.
Sun Screen
Water bottles (best to bring extra for each person)
Fun drinks (its BYOB)
Sun Hat
Camera

The Beach Experience: Duration and Amenities
Upon arriving at Lovers Beach, you'll be greeted by soft golden sands and the gentle sound of waves lapping against the shore. However, entry on to the beach can sometimes be a bit chaotic. The water taxis can't drop you right on the beach so you'll have to walk in about a foot of water to get there its not far just couple steps (yes even Meemaw can do it with some help). Keep in mind sometimes with the waves can make it a little difficult to get out of the boat. No worries though your water taxi driver and his assistants will happily help you!
Even though Lovers Beach doesn't have any restrooms, bars or restaurants there are still several amenities available. Umbrella rentals are offered, providing much-needed shade from the bright Mexican sun. It is advisable to arrive early during peak tourist seasons to secure these rentals, as they can be in high demand. Rentals are cash only but they will typically accept USD. In addition to providing umbrellas, small food vendors operate on the beach, serving snacks and refreshments at reasonable prices. These vendors primarily accept cash, so it is important for visitors to plan accordingly by bringing sufficient funds.
Most water taxis will offer you a round trip service and will pick you up 2 hours after arrival, while this doesn't seem long it will be plenty of time by about noon there is no shade on the beach so unless you rent an umbrella you'll be more than happy to head back to your resort.
Lovers beach has two sides one is where the boats will drop you off and another is a roped off section for swimming. While Cabo is known to not really have swimmable beaches this is a safer area to wade into the water and cool off as the water is typically calmer on this beach. Divorce Beach, located on the same peninsula as Lovers Beach, sits on the Pacific Ocean side and is known for its powerful waves and strong currents—making it unsafe for swimming. However, it’s still absolutely worth a visit. You can walk across the sand between the iconic rock formations to reach it and take in the dramatic views and stunning natural beauty.

The Return Ride
After spending time soaking up the beauty of Lovers Beach, the ride back to the marina is a treat in itself. Most water taxi captains include a short but scenic tour on your return, giving you a closer look at some of Cabo’s most iconic landmarks. You’ll cruise past El Arco (the Arch), Neptune’s Finger, and other striking rock formations that rise dramatically from the sea.
It’s a perfect chance to snap a few more photos and take in the views from the water. If you’re lucky, you might spot sea lions lounging on the rocks or swimming nearby—and keep an eye out for tropical fish below the surface. It’s a peaceful and picture-perfect way to wrap up your beach visit, and a little bonus many visitors don’t realize is included.
Whether you’re heading back at sunset or in the bright midday sun, the return ride gives you one last look at the natural beauty that makes this corner of Cabo so special.

Final Thoughts
Lovers Beach is one of Cabo’s most iconic spots—and for good reason. With its dramatic scenery, crystal-clear water, and unique access point, it’s a must-see for any visitor. While it’s not a full-day destination, it’s the perfect stop for soaking up the beauty and snapping some unforgettable photos.
